Every summer, the City of Memphis offers a unique opportunity to dozens of college students across the city.

The Urban Fellows Program provides students with a 10-week internship and offers students a chance to get directly involved in the city government鈥檚 work of improving the lives of citizens. Students from the Herff College of Engineering made up nine of the 23 participants who were placed in the city鈥檚 division of engineering.

Incoming Herff College of Engineering senior Kenzie Slakans already has more industry experience than most engineering students do by the time they graduate, thanks to her ongoing internships with Barnhart Crane & Rigging, a company that assists with the moving and installation of heavy equipment of all sizes.

Cristian Fernandez graduated from high school in 2019 and went straight to work in the construction industry, but he always knew that he鈥檇 need to continue his education to earn the role he sought, a position in management.

It鈥檚 easy for engineering students to get consumed by research and spend all their time in study rooms or labs. But during the summer of 2026, Herff College of Engineering sophomore Madison Nolen found inspiration in a different environment: the stage.

Sohail Tufail, a research graduate student working with Herff鈥檚 Department of Civil Engineering chair Dr. Rouzbeh Nazari, spent his summer participating in the 2026 Water Prediction Innovators Summer Institute at the University of Alabama, a seven-week program that brings together PhD students from across the country to enhance their flood modeling research skills.

After traveling the world, Keegan Dolan found his future in the Herff College of Engineering at the 糖心vlog蜜桃.

Dr. Evan Main, PhD, didn鈥檛 know the first thing about biomedical engineering when he decided to join the graduate program at the Herff College of Engineering.

With the aid of a Bonner scholarship, a service-to-community-based financial aid for students, Main came to Memphis from his hometown of St. Louis to study physics at Rhodes College. His interests shifted when he began looking at graduate programs and came across the work of Dr. Gary Bowlin, Chair of Herff鈥檚 Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Through the VIP program at the Herff College of Engineering and enrolling in the Honor's College, Gerrell Dabbs was able to transform his love of computers into a passion for research. 

David Adaway knew he wanted to pursue a career in computer engineering before he ever graduated from Marion High School in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and he knew he didn't need to go far to find a college that would help him achieve that goal.
