The UofM Biomedical Engineering program offers multiple pathways to undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (M.S., Ph.D.) degrees, and our 14 faculty actively engage students in several areas of biomedical research. Our undergraduates can tailor the curriculum toward their preferred focus area (with pre-med and dual-degree options as well), and our graduate program is jointly housed with UT Health Science Center's Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery. Our ABET-accredited program continues to grow in size, scope, and impact, with a strong record of post-graduate success for our students. Biomedical Engineering at Herff isn't just about answering the question of what, it's about understanding why. Over 60 percent of our BME graduates who apply to medical school are admitted and 70 percent of our students obtain internships.

Dr. Gary Bowlin

Biomedical Engineering

Meet the Chair

As a senior faculty member in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Bowlin has a long-standing commitment to the training of future generations of engineers and scientists. Over the years, he has trained/mentored 15 high school students in year-long commitments and provided educational and career planning to numerous high school students. He has also directly supervised 80 undergraduate students in research or senior design projects. In addition, he has graduated 32 Master’s degree students and 18 Ph.D. students who have had very productive careers in medicine, industry, and academia.
